Now You Can Download PDFs from Kindle DX Browser with Hacks

You can directly download e-books from amazon kindle store over Whispernet. And it costs money to amazon. There are some basic web browsing facilities that come with your kindle. Amazon didn’t put any option to directly download books from any other sources since it would be then at the cost of amazon. However people are constantly searching ways to hack kindle to get around the limitation imposed by amazon. A more recent one is the download capability of PDF books directly onto kindle dx by Nirmal Patel. kindle dx is a decent device to read PDF books even though amazon doesn’t sell PDF e-books; but most of the kindle dx buyers are attracted to it due to that capability. Amazon might not like it; but kindle dx owners would definitely like it. Here is what Nirmal says:

I’m a Ph.D. student in Computer Science. This means that I spend a lot of my time reading academic papers which are published on the web as PDF files. So naturally, when the kindle dx came out I was excited about having an eink screen that could properly display the standard two-column format for ACM papers. One thing about the DX that I found annoying was that the kindle browser did not allow me to download PDFs by simply clicking on a link to a PDF file. So being an enterprising CS major, I started poking around and eventually arrived at the following solution.

He says his hack is based on similar hack used in the Unicode Font Hack. So the steps are similar to unicode font hack. There are two .bin files: one to install, and the other one to uninstall. You need to put installer .bin file at the root of your kindle dx, and then update kindle from menu->settings. If you want to uninstall it put the uninstaller .bin file at the root, and update your kindle.
