Plastic Logic and Barnes & Noble have announced on Tuesday that Plastic Logic’s Que e-Reader will be sold through Barnes & Noble’s retail stores and on B&N’s Web site in 2010. I hope you remember a short post two weeks back on this site titled, Que Reader From Plastic Logic: 8.5″X11″,Touch Screen, AT&T 3G, Wi-Fi, Debut January 2010. You can watch a video as well in that post. Cnet News reports that
The slim Que (one-third inch thick), which is geared toward mobile professionals, is supposed to be able to handle PDF, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel documents as well as having tools for “interacting with and managing the content.” Most pundits expect the Que to a more sophisticated e-reader with more processing horsepower than existing models and a higher price tag–we’re guessing at least $400.
Both Barnes & Noble and Plastic Logic suggest that as such the two models won’t really be competing against each other even if they’ll be on display near each other in stores. The news release notes that the two readers represent a choice for Barnes & Noble’s customers “based on their reading needs.” Just as importantly, the additional device also helps Barnes & Noble foster the impression that its e-book platform has a strong foundation with multiple business partners.
On another front, Publisher’s Weekly reports that nook has become the fastest selling item on B&N’s website. Remember that B&N is taking pre-order now and nook is not yet available in the stores. Referring to the B&N.com president William Lynch, the report says:
B&N doesn’t expect to earn a high margin on the sale of the device itself, but he expects that to be somewhat offset by the sale of accessories and warranties (the nook “eco-system.”) Riggio told analysts that B&N’s margins on the sale of e-books will be higher than on physical books since there are no warehousing, shipping, receiving, pick-and-pack and handling costs. He explained that although there is stiff competition on the pricing of e-book frontlist titles, the e-book market is a long tail business, with a “much much longer tail” than physical books.
There were some report last week by PaidContent that Barnes & Noble Won’t Sell nook To Go In All Stores. The Wired Gadget Lab has posted a recent update that
Mary Ellen Keating, Barnes & Noble spokesperson, emailed to tell us that Barnes & Noble is planning “to have nook eBook readers in stock in the majority of its stores by the peak holiday season and plans to have nook devices in stock in all of its stores by early next year.”
