What is the best Way to Organize books on Kindle? – Yes, Tagging

In my last post I talked about creating folders for kindle. By creating folders you can organize books in the kindle that can only be useful for archieving, and you can see the folders when you connect it to the computer. You can’t the folders on kindle. On kindle homescreen, you’ll see all the books.  In case you have 100 books on kindle, it doesn’t help you finding the book easily from the homescreen. An alternative to using folders is to use “tags”, and it’s better method to find books easily and comfortably. Instead of finding a book by its location, you “tag” it with an identifying label, and then search for that label. Before I go over the steps to do tagging, let you know that such tagging doesn’t work with PDF books, and also with Topaz books. Topaz books are identified with the extension of .azw1 (when you download them by Whispernet) or .tpz ( when you download them by USB).

Now the steps are:

• Open a book from kindle homescreen.
• Put a note with Menu-Add note or highlight, which will be considered as a tag, into the book. Always you something unique, not a meaningful word. For example: if you want to tag books by genre like ‘romance’ type ‘kromance’. If you want to tag books by authors like ‘Debbie Macomber‘, type ‘kMacomber’ (I’m using last name here, you can do that with last name or full name. You can also tag a book by more than one tag. In that case you have to type separate notes in separate palces. Ideally, it’s better to do that on the first page of the book.
• Now go back to homescreen, and just type your tag ‘kromance’, and hit the search button, kindle will show you the clickable list of all romance books you tagged. If you want to search by author type ‘kMacomber’. kindle will show clickable list of all the books written by Debbie Macmber.

Remeber, kindle takes a little while to process the tagging information – might be a minute or tue. So if you don’t see tagged books immediately, wait a minute before start searching.

Can I create Folders on Kindle?

You can create folders on your kindle, but you will not see them there. You will only be able to see them when your kindle is connected to a computer. Books in the folders will show on your kindle, but you won’t see the folder names. You won’t be able to move the books from one folder to another on the kindle. Remember, If you create a folder outside of the documents folder , and put the books there, you won’t see the titles in the homescreen. Here are the steps to create folders on kindle:

• Connect the your kindle to your computer using your included USB cord.
• Go into your Windows Explorer on your computer.You should see your kindle as a “drive”
• In the root you should see a documents folder. Your books that you downloaded wirelessly are  on this folder.
• Right-click inside the documents folder to create a new folder. Name this whatever you like. It will only show through your computer, not on your kindle
• You can move the books from documents  folder to this sub-folder, or move books from your computer. You can also create additional folders inside these folders if you can to organize books by genre or or by author or any other type.
• Now disconnect kindle from the computer. You will not see the folders on the homescreen of kindle, but you will see the titles.

How Can You Put Kindle Books on a Wish List?

You already know how to create wishlist of books, DVD etc. associated with you amazon customer account, and you can make them public  or private . Generally,you can put items on the list by clicking on an “Add to Wish List” button. Unfortunately, such button  is not displayed in kindle store. As a result you can’t create a wish list of kindle e-books that you want to purchase later on or can’t put such list on your website.

There are two ways to putting the kindle e-books on a wish list.

1. Let’s you’re on a book page, for example, this one. Scroll down toward the end of the page – after  all customer reviews you will see a link “See all …customer reviews” as seen in the following picture. When you click that link, you’ll find an option on the right screen “Add to Wish List” button. NOTE: You can’t have this option available if the book isn’t reviewed at all.
2. The most convenient way to add books is to use the Universal Wish List button. This is an Amazon feature that allows you to add kindle books, as well as other items from Amazon. Go to this page, and follow the instruction to add the button on the browser’s

Remember, you’ve to add this button to each computer that you intent to use to add books in the wish list.
