With the release of kindle for PC (kindle for Mac coming soon) you don’t need a kindle or iphone/ipodtouch to buy kindle e-books from amazon. If you travel a lot, and love to read novels for a long time a $259 kindle 2 price is now better; but if you need to read a lot of PDF e-books, or technical e-books, or even e-textbook, then kindle dx with a price tag $489 is way too expensive given that pdf e-books on kindle dx lack annotation, dictionary support etc. If you’re ready to spend $40-$50 more then you can buy Asus eeePC T91 Tablet with Win XP/Windows 7. If you go for 16GB one with winXP, that’s even cheaper, cheaper than kindle dx. Given the lack of flexibility with e-ink devices, and high price tag, and the fact is that the market for a perfect e-Reader still in infancy, it seems to me a good deal to go for such tablet devices, or UMPC devices in the same price range, or even cheaper.

That’s all well and good, but have you ever noticed the difference between reading a book and reading on an LCD screen? That is what you pay extra for by buying an e-reader. The difference is simply too significant to compare them as you did.
I totally agree with you. That’s why I said if you want to read technical paper (might be in PDF format) then eInk devices are not adequate. But if you want to read something text-based then such eInk devices are okay.
