Instapaper Rolls Out Previous Kindle Supports, Now Also Offers ePub Format & USB Transfer
Instapaper, the famous bookmarking tool for kindle has already rolled out, but now still you can read your preferred blogs on kindle through USB transfer. Additionally, it now offers content in ePub format since many readers like Sony Reader supports ePub. TechCrunch reports the problem with Instapaper kindle support:
There were a number of problems with the kindle/Instapaper support. The biggest is that the system was completely unreliable. The way Instapaper works on the kindle is that you have to set up the service to email your kindle either daily or weekly wrap-ups of the articles you bookmark on the web. In my experience, about half the time this would work, the other half, these summaries simply would not get sent.
The developer, Marco Arment, says
he’s tried talking to Amazon about the issue, but has never received a response. Considering that kindle users are paying $0.15 for each of these emails sent (an unfortunate side effect of the kindle’s free built-in network), and it still is completely unreliable, this is totally unacceptable. So Arment has come up with a new way of doing Instapaper + kindle: USB transfers. (via Techcrunch)
From Instapaper blog:
- ePub downloads: Download any folder’s 20 most recent articles as an .epub file that’s readable on many popular e-reader devices, including most Sony Readers and (probably) the upcoming B&N nook.
- kindle downloads: Download any folder’s 20 most recent articles as a kindle-compatible .mobi file.
- The Printable view can now be used in any folder.
A few brief notes:
- The ePub and kindle features will be a bit slow for now. Give them a minute to download. I’m working on speed improvements over time.
- The Instapaper.com site doesn’t work properly from the kindle’s browser yet. These files are intended to be transferred via USB. The upside: It’s free, fast, and compatible with non-U.S. Kindles.
- I’m unable to personally test on a huge variety of ePub-compatible devices. Please let me know if it doesn’t work well on yours.
- Not every Sony Reader can read ePub files. On some models, you need to install the most recent software updates from Sony first.
- The kindle and ePub features use the new text parser regardless of your selected parser. A huge upside to this is that they’ll include many images that are contained within article content.
