Mike Elgan from ComputerWorld writes 7 reasons why e-book readers make lousy gifts this year. In counter, Lance Ulanoff from PCmag writes 7 Reasons Why eReaders Make Great Gifts This Year. The following table shows the main points from these two authors:

Why Lousy? Why Great?
  • We’re on the brink of radical change in how people read e-books
  • Form Follows Function
  • E-book readers are the least discounted gadgets on the market
  • There is No better Way to Travel with All of Your Reading Material
  • There are so many other new ways to read e-books
  • Access to the Digital e-book Store is Free, No Matter Where You Are and Books are Cheaper, Too
  • Access to the Digital e-book StorAdd an Imagee is Free, No Matter Where You Are and Books are Cheaper, Too
  • E-books are the Best Way to Read the Old-Fashioned Way
  • E-book readers are old and busted
  • E-books Are for Sharing
  • Everyone who really wanted one already has one
  • Lots of People Still Want e-books
  • One of the best choices is unavailable
  • E-reader Technology is Still Cutting Edge

So what do you think? For me, both set of arguments are equally appealing; but I can’t resist myself buying one ereader. To be precise, I like both physical books and ebooks; but I don’t need a lot of the books to keep stacked on my table or shelf. And at the same time I want some ereader to be able to give me some sort of benefits that I can’t get from physical books. The ebook market is evolving very fast. You might not get a perfect one that suits all your needs; but as long as you enjoy reading on such a device you can go for that.
