<p>The 6-inch (15-cm) touch-screen device, which will hit stores in early May for $139, lands in a market where<a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="ORCRP001070" title="Apple Inc." href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/economy-business-finance/computing-information-technology-industry/apple-inc.-ORCRP001070.topic" style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(51, 102, 153); text-decoration: none; ">Apple Inc.</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="ORCRP000672" title="Amazon.com Inc." href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/economy-business-finance/amazon.com-inc.-ORCRP000672.topic" style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(51, 102, 153); text-decoration: none; ">Amazon</a>&nbsp;are battling with Barnes &amp; Noble for customers who want to read books and magazines on small portable devices. Weighing just under 7 ounces (200 grams), it is Barnes &amp; Noble&#8217;s lightest Nook and is aimed at people who want to read in the dark without a light.</p>
<p>To read in the dark with other e-readers that use electronic ink, consumers had to buy an external light that attached to the device. While Apple&#8217;s iPads have backlit screens, Barnes &amp; Noble said its technology creates a better nighttime reading experience than an LCD screen because it throws off less light and will not disturb a reader&#8217;s partner who is trying to sleep.</p>
<p>While Barnes &amp; Noble is first to market with a glowing e-reader, Amazon may be hot on its heels. The Internet retailer is working on its own e-reader with a glowing screen, according to a report on April 6 from the blog TechCrunch. Amazon did not respond to calls for comment on the report.</p>
<p>&#8220;If Amazon isn&#8217;t already working on one, they will immediately start working on one now after today&#8217;s announcement,&#8221; Forrester analyst James McQuivey said.</p>
<p>Fighting deep-pocketed Amazon has proved to be an expensive proposition for Barnes &amp; Noble, as it has poured hundreds of millions into developing the Nook. In January, the retailer forecast a steeper net loss than expected for the fiscal year, as it continues to spend on the technology.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are investing a lot but we feel good that those investments will pay off,&#8221; Barnes &amp; Noble Chief Executive William Lynch said in an interview on Thursday&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;</p></div>

With a tap, a slider popped up on the screen, and as it was dragged to the right, the screen lit up evenly with a rather cool light. In the dark, it was plainly noticeable as a glow, and in uneven light — say, shade or a shuttered room — the slight illumination made the screen much more readable. At full blast it was definitely projecting some light (technically speaking it was&nbsp;<em style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; border-image: initial; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 14px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; ">reflecting</em>&nbsp;it), but it was still a soft glow and not the harsh flashlight of a backlit LCD.</p>

But, of course, the e-ink screen is in fact grey and dark grey, not black on off-white, as paper is, so a cooler light may actually work better. At any rate, they are apparently sensitive to these issues and looking into it. I thought that the text looked better as well, but it&#8217;s possible that this was the result of improved font rendering and aliasing reduction, or perhaps something to do with the light.</p>

But reading off one&#8217;s phone is irksome in many other ways, not the least of which is the lack of the far more readable e-ink Kindle screen – something Amazon&#8217;s much-touted Kindle Fire is also missing&#8230;&#8230;..</p>

Beginning on April 27, with preorders available now, Amazon will ship its top-end E-Ink reader to 175 countries and territories, with support for digital bookstores based in France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the UK as well as the United States.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; ">It&#8217;s exciting news for anyone in those countries who&#8217;ve been waiting to buy a touchscreen e-reader from Amazon, or one that supports buying books and syncing with Amazon&#8217;s cloud internationally over 3G. In most of these countries, international support has been limited to the basic entry-level Kindle, which is inexpensive (though Wi-Fi only) and has an awkward interface.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; ">At the same time, it&#8217;s not exactly the comprehensive global launch that Amazon&#8217;s press headlines might lead you to think. Amazon may be shipping Kindle Touch to 175 countries, but that doesn&#8217;t mean it&#8217;s fully and equally supported in all 175. Once you drill down, it&#8217;s an uneven lattice of user languages, supported and unsupported e-bookstores, and network coverage.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; ">Let&#8217;s start with languages. Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G now support German, French, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and American or British English. Those are the languages of the interface; Notes, book titles, and search will work in those languages, but no others.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; ">So, let&#8217;s say you live in Romania, Japan, or any one of the 175 countries where none of those six languages are dominant. Unless you speak English or another one of these dominant second languages, you&#8217;re probably not going to be able to meaningfully navigate the device. And even in this set, Brazilian Portuguese is still more aspirational than actual, because Amazon hasn&#8217;t yet opened an e-bookstore in Brazil. But still, between English, French, Spanish, etc., a lot more of the reading world is covered.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; ">The same can&#8217;t be said about the wireless network. Let&#8217;s say you live in the Republic of Georgia. And you read English. Fantastic. Amazon will happily ship you a Kindle Touch 3G. But under &#8220;Important Product Information for Your Country,&#8221; Amazon kindly notes that &#8220;Kindle wireless is currently unavailable in your country. You can transfer books and personal documents to your Kindle via USB. You may prefer to purchase the Wi-Fi-only Kindle.&#8221; Yes, indeed, I think I may — since the touted international wireless network doesn&#8217;t work in my country of origin. But who knows — maybe I travel to Western Europe regularly, and I want the 3G anyways.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; ">Now we get into the weird stuff. The Kindle Touch 3G is on sale in Amazon&#8217;s sites in Germany, Italy, France, etc. It&#8217;s not on sale through <a href="http://amazon.co.jp">Amazon.co.jp</a> (Amazon Japan) — which makes sense, I suppose, because Amazon doesn&#8217;t sell e-books in Japan yet. But it&#8217;s also doesn&#8217;t appear to be available for sale at <a href="http://amazon.ca">Amazon.ca</a> — Amazon Canada — where Amazon absolutely sells e-books and e-readers. You can buy a Kindle Touch with our without 3G at <a href="http://amazon.com">Amazon.com</a> and have it shipped to Canada, but you can&#8217;t buy it through your <a href="http://amazon.ca">Amazon.ca</a> account. That&#8217;s bizarre. (Amazon Kindle and <a href="http://amazon.ca">Amazon.ca</a> representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.)&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.</p>

But I soon found that I had difficulty recalling the names of characters from chapter to chapter. At first, I attributed the lapses to a scary reality of getting older — but then I discovered that I didn&#8217;t have this problem when I read paperbacks.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; ">When I discussed my quirky recall with friends and colleagues, I found out I wasn&#8217;t the only one who suffered from &#8220;e-book moments.&#8221; Online, I&nbsp;<a href="http://bobsutton.typepad.com/my_weblog/2012/02/larry-page-my-wifes-lament-and-reading-on-books-vs-screens.html" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; text-decoration: none; ">discovered</a>&nbsp;that Google&#8217;s Larry Page himself had concerns about research showing that on-screen reading is measurably slower than reading on paper.</p>

On many levels, e-books seem like better alternatives to textbooks — they can be easily updated and many formats allow readers to interact with the material more, with quizzes, video, audio and other multimedia to reinforce lessons. But some studies suggest that there may be significant advantages in printed books if your goal is to remember what you read long-term.</p>

She found that when the exact same material is presented in both media, there is no measurable difference in student performance.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; ">However, there are some subtle distinctions that favor print, which may matter in the long run. In one study involving psychology students, the medium did seem to matter. &#8220;We bombarded poor psychology students with economics that they didn&#8217;t know,&#8221; she says. Two differences emerged. First, more repetition was required with computer reading to impart the same information.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; ">Second, the book readers seemed to digest the material more fully. Garland explains that when you recall something, you either &#8220;know&#8221; it and it just &#8220;comes to you&#8221; — without necessarily consciously recalling the context in which you learned it — or you &#8220;remember&#8221; it by cuing yourself about that context and then arriving at the answer. &#8220;Knowing&#8221; is better because you can recall the important facts faster and seemingly effortlessly&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.</p>

<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; ">If you check out a Kindle book, you may notice that some are limited to transfer via USB only.</p>

<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; ">This is due to restrictions publishers have placed on their titles. At the moment (February 2012), Penguin is the publisher that has chosen this limitation for their Kindle titles in Library2Go.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; ">You can tell which books are published by Penguin by clicking on the title in Library2Go to get to the full information about that book.</p>

<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; ">What USB transfer only means that the Kindle book cannot be delivered using wifi to a Kindle device or to a Kindle app. The title can only be transferred to a Kindle device using a USB connection. Amazon states that &#8220;these restricted titles also may not be accessed on Kindle reading applications.&#8221; This means if you have a Kindle app on another device, such as an Android tablet or an iPad, Amazon states you will not be able to access these USB transfer restricted titles.</p>

<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; ">In our testing, we have found that most of the time, a Penguin Kindle title cannot be transfered to a Kindle reading app. If you are using an iOS or Android device, or any other device compatible with the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.overdrive.com/software/omc/" style="text-decoration: underline; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; ">OverDrive Media Console app</a>, we recommend you use that app instead for reading USB restricted ebooks, or for all of your ebooks from Library2Go. <div>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">I have a confession to make: despite having reviewed a few e-readers, and having written dozens of articles about them, I&#8217;ve never really used one. I mean, I&#8217;ve used them enough to know a good one from a bad one, to understand the features, and to do a proper evaluation — but I&#8217;ve never made one part of my life, the way one makes a mobile phone or laptop part of one&#8217;s life. In that way I haven&#8217;t<em style="font-style: italic; font-weight: normal; ">really</em>&nbsp;used an e-reader. Until just recently.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">As a book lover, I view e-readers as interlopers; as a practical person, I acknowledge them as inevitable. But in both cases, I have come to view them as a deeply unsatisfying reading experience. They fall short of paper in meaningful ways, and objecting to them should not be considered technophobic.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">The future of e-books is bright, but as far as I&#8217;m concerned, right now we&#8217;re still in the dark age — though that isn&#8217;t to say the stone age.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">The core experience of the new Kindle, Nook, and Kobo (pictured) is practically the same. Sure, there are aesthetic differences and the selection is different, but when you&#8217;re doing what the devices are intended to do — reading a book, page by page — they are nearly identical.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">Now I expect the PR departments have already started composing a new email with their talking points about how their device is the best, but let&#8217;s be realistic. These guys are using almost exactly the same parts (the most important bit, the screen, is the same in all three) and if you took the logos off the devices, few people would be able to tell you which is which or express a strong preference.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">I don&#8217;t say this to denigrate the devices. This generation of e-readers is the most user-friendly and practical by far. But aside from the change to a touchscreen, e-readers have barely advanced from the day they were first introduced. So when I say I prefer paper, that&#8217;s not sentimentality. Paper really is just better.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">No, I&#8217;m not putting you on or trying to play the devil&#8217;s advocate. But I&#8217;m willing to make a few concessions first. Obviously e-readers are better in a few ways: the wireless in the Kindle which allows you to get books almost wherever you are, for instance. And you can certainly keep more books on one device than you can keep in your carry-on. But that&#8217;s pretty much where the benefits end, isn&#8217;t it?</p>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "><a href="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/jackal.jpg" rel="lightbox[515136]" class="cboxElement" style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; "><font class="Apple-style-span" color="#000000"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-515474" jackal"="" src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/jackal.jpg?w=640&amp;h=494" alt="" width="640" height="494" style="border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: auto; clear: both; max-width: 640px; "></font></a></p>
<div style="text-align: -webkit-auto; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "><small><em style="font-style: italic; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px;">Text can be pixelated or low-contrast</em></small></div>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">The screens aren&#8217;t actually that good. You can admit it, it&#8217;s okay. Even the newest ones. They&#8217;re rather grey, and the text doesn&#8217;t&nbsp;<em style="font-style: italic; font-weight: normal; ">really</em>&nbsp;look that good, does it? They&#8217;re a bit small, too. Don&#8217;t you feel it&#8217;s a bit limiting? You can&#8217;t replace a newspaper with this thing, and images look pretty bad. That blinking thing when it refreshes itself is annoying, finding a particular chapter or passage can be a pain, and lending or borrowing books isn&#8217;t as straightforward as it could be.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">Am I just being an entitled consumer? A bit, yes. But there&#8217;s a good reason for my (mild and proportionate) frustration. The makers of e-readers have made a conscious choice over the last two years or so: provide the same product at a lower price, not a better product at the same price. It&#8217;s not that I have a problem with this. I <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2010/03/24/dirt-cheap-and-no-features-to-speak-of-will-the-kobo-e-reader-sell-by-the-million/">http://techcrunch.com/2010/03/24/dirt-cheap-and-no-features-to-speak-of-will-the-kobo-e-reader-sell-by-the-million/</a> two years ago that this was the end game for the current players. That&#8217;s only an issue if, like me, the initial devices held no interest. For many, the race to the bottom was a good thing, making the basic e-reading experience possible for an extremely low price (and getting lower year by year). This is already having serious effects on the publishing and education ecosystems.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">But what you see is also the inevitable result of companies relying on a dwindling pool of OEMs capable of manufacturing parts in the millions. The leading devices all use the same third-generation E-Ink display; few people would notice differences between the way they handle text, or care either way. As I mentioned, there are differences in the interface outside of books, and in how you search and buy, that sort of thing, but the purpose of these devices is&nbsp;<em style="font-style: italic; font-weight: normal; ">to display e-books</em>, and they all do it without appreciable differences.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">Now, when their products are the same, companies compete on bullshit. We saw this in the 90s when every Compaq, HP, Dell, and Gateway PC was using the same pieces, and we see it today with TV makers who all have the same fundamental features and have to invent new numbers to increment at every CES. Markets at this stage are ripe to be broken into, as Apple is fond of doing. This point is when it often steps into the picture. I don&#8217;t mean to imply Apple will enter the e-reader wars (in fact, the iPad is their entry in a way), but&nbsp;<em style="font-style: italic; font-weight: normal; ">someone</em>&nbsp;is going to have to change the game. Selling a commodity, which is what e-readers have become, is a dangerous business in tech, because commodities tend to devalue rather quickly.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">What needs to happen? A superior product, that&#8217;s all. E-readers can&#8217;t remain dumb, paperback-sized, text display gadgets forever. If they&#8217;re going to replace books, and paper, they need to learn a few more tricks.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "><a href="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/books.jpg" rel="lightbox[515136]" class="cboxElement" style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; "><font class="Apple-style-span" color="#000000"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-515475" books"="" src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/books.jpg?w=640&amp;h=600" alt="" width="640" height="600" style="border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: auto; clear: both; max-width: 640px; "></font></a></p>
<div style="text-align: -webkit-auto; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "><small><em style="font-style: italic; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px;">Browsing your &#8220;library&#8221; is slow and lacks discoverability; organization isn&#8217;t organic</em></small></div>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">It&#8217;ll take some time; no one wants to obsolete their own product, and these readers are setting up what is potentially a very profitable ecosystem. But at the same time, if&nbsp;<em style="font-style: italic; font-weight: normal; ">they</em>&nbsp;don&#8217;t do it, someone else might. Leave your lunch out too long and someone might just eat it for you. So you better believe that the big guys are planning&nbsp;<em style="font-style: italic; font-weight: normal; ">real</em>&nbsp;replacements for the e-reader of today, and are on the lookout for any sign that they might get beaten to the punch.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">What will the new features be? Well, for example,&nbsp;<a href="http://techcrunch.com/2011/04/18/aerobee-bridgeston/" style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; ">Bridgestone</a>&nbsp;has produced a screen that appears to beat E-Ink at every level. And half the electronic companies out there are hard at work on flexible OLED or bistable displays. Sony is testing the waters with a&nbsp;<a href="http://techcrunch.com/2011/07/13/hands-on-with-the-sony-s1-and-s2/" style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; ">foldable tablet</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="http://techcrunch.com/2011/05/06/readius-foldable-e-reader-to-be-resurrected/" style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; ">Readius</a>&nbsp;has been flogging their flexible device for a while now. E Ink, conscious that they&#8217;ll have to make serious advances in order to keep their position as head bistable display honcho, is making screens that can be&nbsp;<a href="http://techcrunch.com/2011/05/04/e-ink-shows-off-more-flexible-crunchable-screens/" style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; ">crumpled or attached to cloth</a>. Color e-paper is shipping right now, though it&#8217;s not particularly good. Don&#8217;t expect the e-readers of tomorrow to be the same static window on text that they are today.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">The screen quality, too, is going to have to improve. In both resolution and contrast, e-readers need to approach print on paper, or they will forever be understood as being a sub-par option, grey and indistinct. More comfortable to read on than LCDs, sure, but for how long? The advantage of the reflective display will eventually be outweighed by other factors if they don&#8217;t start moving.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">And we&#8217;ll want to&nbsp;<a href="http://techcrunch.com/2011/11/11/in-defense-of-the-stylus/" style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; ">write on them</a>, too. The&nbsp;<a href="http://techcrunch.com/2011/02/04/noteslate-a-simple-e-paper-device-that-may-or-may-not-exist/" style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; ">Noteslate</a>&nbsp;device, unfortunately totally fictional (but apparently now in the works), awakened a sleeping giant of gadget envy on the net. Who&nbsp;<em style="font-style: italic; font-weight: normal; ">wouldn&#8217;t</em>&nbsp;want one of those things? Yet none of the major e-reading devices are even attempting it.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "><a href="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/highlight.jpg" rel="lightbox[515136]" class="cboxElement" style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; "><font class="Apple-style-span" color="#000000"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-515477" highlight"="" src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/highlight.jpg?w=640&amp;h=481" alt="" width="640" height="481" style="border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: auto; clear: both; max-width: 640px; "></font></a></p>
<div style="text-align: -webkit-auto; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "><small><em style="font-style: italic; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px;">Annotating and highlighting content is clumsy and slow</em></small></div>

Social and collaborative features, no doubt, like those just beginning to be promoted; more portability and ruggedness; features to enable reading by the blind, like quality real-time text-to-speech and tactile displays; richer formatting and rendering; self-illuminating screens or text; adjustable page tint; to say all, anything you can imagine might improve the reading experience, and probably a few things you haven&#8217;t imagined yet.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 12.5px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12.5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; ">These fantasy devices don&#8217;t have to beat paper at&nbsp;<em style="font-style: italic; font-weight: normal; ">everything</em>&nbsp;— after all, they&#8217;ll never beat it on battery life — it&#8217;s just a little disappointing in how few ways they better their venerable competitor. And &#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); ">.</span></p>
