Amazon is head-to-head with B&N again in regards to pricing of ereaders. B&N has just announced Nook Tablet at $249 – a $50 higher price tag but with double the size of the RAM and internal storage. Similarly, B&N cuts the price of Nook Touch to $99 – a $40 less price tag for a similar kind of device- Kindle Touch wifi – by Amazon. However, Amazon also selling the same device at $99 with special ads offer, which B&N is not doing. In response to B&N announcement Amazon didn’t cut the price of any of the devices. Of course, Kindle Touch wifi is not out yet, and a lot of people have already pre-ordered it. Can Amazon bear the cost of cutting the price of Nook Touch wifi without Ads at $99? That’s difficult to answer. However, Amazon has recently taken several steps:

  • Kindle will be available in 1,600 stores on November 15 – the release date of Kindle Fire. The stores include Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Staples, Sam’s Club, Radio Shack, Office Depot, and more. For sure, this is Amazon strategic move to counter B&N which is arguing all the times that customers can’t see and feel Kindle before they buy.
  • Amazon has just released Kindle Cloud Reader for FireFox. This is what Amazon is doing quite a while. The company is developing Kindle Reader App for every possible devices – mobile, PC, or Mac. This has heated up blogosphere, and people are taking about it on the blog street.
  • Amazon bought a speech recognition start-up yap. Apparently, the deal was completed long time ago. However, there are some controversies regarding the accuracy of the news. If it’s true then there might have some use of such acquisition in terms of Kindle platform in future.

About a week ago, we discovered some ‘Kindle Fire’-only contents like childrens’ ebooks and DC Comics books on Amazon Store. Since those titles are not available for e-ink Kindles it was our guess that there will be some new kind of format exclusive for Kindle Fire is on the way. Now it seems that we got the new format called Kindle Format 8 (KF8). It’s not clear whether e-Ink Kindle will support this new format. This new format will support HTML5 and CSS3. And Kindle Touch would be a good candidate for this format as well. However, limitations of e-Ink screen and the power of processor of Kindles might hinder that kind of support. According to Amazon:

KF8 is the next generation file format for Kindle books – replacing Mobi 7. As showcased on Kindle Fire, KF8 enables publishers to create great-looking books in categories that require rich formatting and design such as children’s picture books, comics & graphic novels, technical & engineering books and cookbooks. Kindle Format 8 replaces the Mobi format and adds over 150 new formatting capabilities, including fixed layouts, nested tables, callouts, sidebars and Scalable Vector Graphics, opening up more opportunities to create Kindle books that readers will love.

The features of new format are:

  • CSS3 support
  • Floating elements
  1. Fixed layouts
  • Text on background images
  • Embedded fonts
  • Numbered and bulleted lists
  • Drop caps

Amazon is planning to release soon a new version of Kindle Publisher Tools – KindleGen 2 – that make it easier and faster for publishers to create high quality Kindle books. With this new tool it would be easy to publish Kindle content from a wide variety of sources including HTML, XHTML, and EPUB.

There will also be a new preview tool – Kindle Previewer 2 – that will provide an easy way for publishers to preview how titles will look on Kindle devices and apps so they can be confident that their Kindle books look great.

To me, it’s a bold and good step by Amazon. This will help Amazon to develop a vibrant eTextbook market in the coming days.

The new Kindle Fire is not out yet, and reports are coming in that Amazon is on the move to release a large screen Kindle Fire during the first half of 2012. According to Digitimes, Foxconn, the company behind iPad, has secured orders from Amazon for assembling second-generation Kindle Fire tablet. The current 7″ Kindle Fire is being assembled by Quanta Computer. There are some reports that Amazon contacted Foxconn to assemble 7″ Kindle Fire; but Foxconn tried not to jump in 7″ devices since they are more akin to work with iPad-like screen size.

Amazon has launched French Kindle Store, and the new French Kindle wifi is available for pre-order. No words yet regarding other models of Kindle yet. The price is EUR 99, which is equivalent to US$130. This is not ads supported one. That’s for U.S. only. However, non-ad supported U.S. kindle wifi is only US$109. In other words, Amazon is charging more on French Kindle.The Kindle will be available October 14, 2011.

Here is the list of what the French kindle Store offers now:

  • 35,000 French ebooks
  • 28 L’Express best sellers
  • 4,000 free classics in French
  • more than 80,000 English title
  • Already 14 French newspapers and 11 magazines are available – Le Monde, Les Echos, Le Figaro, Libération and Aujourd’hui en France/Le Parisien. Some English newspapers and magazines are also available.
  • French authors will be able to use the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) tool to publish their titles on Kindle Store.

According to Amazon Kindle Team,

Our new Kindle Touch 3G enables you to connect to the Kindle Store, download books and periodicals, and access Wikipedia – all over 3G or Wi-Fi. Experimental web browsing (outside of Wikipedia) on Kindle Touch 3G is only available over Wi-Fi.
Our Kindle Keyboard 3G will continue to offer experimental web browsing over 3G or Wi-Fi.

After almost 200 posts with title “Kindle Touch 3G – no more web browsing via 3G? “on the Kindle forum on Amazon, the Kindle Team has responded on the issue. Defintely, Amazon is trying to save money on 3G data. It’s not known how much the Kindle Keyboard 3G owners use the experimental web browser on 3G network. Howover, Amazon has that information, and it’s likely that by not providing 3G access on Kindle Touch Amazon is transfering the savings on 3G data in terms for reduced price of Kindles to the customers.

Amazon Kindle eReader lost its number one sales rank on the amazon store. Kindle Fire has now number one in sales rank. In just three days after the announcement of Kindle Fire tablet along with three new kindle eReaders, Kindle eReader has slipped away from top rank for the first time in nearly three years. Kindle touch wifi with special offer now in second position in the ranking. The popularity of tablets, and people’s crave for a cheap but useful tablet (don’t have to be ipad-like) has made this happening. People are buying more Kindle Fire tablets than actual Kindle eReaders. However, this might be partially true. Since there are five different kinds of Kindle e-ink readers are available in the Amazon Store, and people are buying Kindles according to their preferences, we don’t whether the volume of all Kindle e-ink readers sales altogether is higher than that of Kindle Fire though that is most likely. Amazon has never released any sales figures of Kindle. However, according to a report by InformationWeek,

“Despite the higher price point, the Kindle Fire outstripped sales of the other three new Kindle units combined,” said eDataSource. Amazon officials did not return a call seeking comment on Kindle Fire sales.

Hey Kindle lovers, do you know that you have now 5GB free storage from Amazon Now. You don’t have to be Kindle owner. Once you buy any Kindle ebook you’re eligible to

have the storage. Previously, you could sent any document from your approved email addresses (you can add as many email address as you want to send documents) to your “usename@free.kindle.com” or username@kindle.com account to be sent back to your Kindle as converted .mobi format. There was no way the original document could have been saved for future use. In fact, Amazon didn’t allow that. Now you have that opportunity.

From the figure, as you can see there is an item called “Personal Documents” on the left column. Once you click that you would be able to see your personal document space that have been used already out of 5GB. I have here only one document sent from my approved email address. The “Actions” button gives you choice to delete the file. That’s the way you manage your 5GB space.

 

In order go to this page, first you have to login with amazon account information. Then go to “manage your kindle”. This will bring you to your Kindle Library. Then on the left menu, click “Personal Documents”, and you are on this page.

This free space is in addition to 5GB Amazon Cloud Storage that every amazon customer gets. However, you can’t store files on cloud storage by emailing as you can do for Kindle Library personal storage. You’ve to upload files manually in cloud drive. You can download files from cloud drive as well.

AppleInsider reports by refering Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who has detailed three new kindle products that are expected to be announced at Amazon’s media event this Wednesday. These products are:

  • A new 6″ e-ink kindle
  • A new 6″ e-ink kindle with touch screen
  • A 7″ IPS (e-ink and LCD) kindle tablet

According to AppleInsider report, the tablet ” is expected to be fairly spartan, as it will reportedly not include a camera, GPS, cover glass or 3G data functionality. Kuo also noted that the tablet will run an older version of Google’s Android mobile operating system”. And the price of the device is expected to be $199. The low-end Kindle would cost $99. No word about touch kindle.
