It is Love not Time that Heals all wounds

It has been five years since the Baltimore water taxi accident. I am sure that many people around the world remember that fateful day, but few of them have had a chance to learn more about the aftermath. In his book, The Last Rose, survivor Tom Pierce talks about what the first year of his life was like after losing both his wife and daughter while visiting the Inner Harbor.

The Last Rose is now available as a Kindle book for just $1.99, as well as the hard cover edition. You can learn more at Tom’s website http://www.thelastrose.com.

Last week Amazon announced a very strong third quarter. Net income reached $199 million – 70% up on the same period for last year. Both revenues and profits were higher than analyst’s forecasts and a good fourth quarter is now foreseen. The price of Amazon shares rose by 27% amid clear expectations that Amazon would develop into the number one web retail player in the post-recession economy. A key factor in Amazon’s success has undoubtedly been the stellar performance of the Amazon Kindle e-book reader .

We’ve already heard some talk that ASUS might possibly be launching an e-book reader before the end of the year that may or may not be the world’s cheapest , and it looks like some unnamed execs at the company have now dropped a few more details on the matter. While it’s all still far from official, CENS reports that ASUS’ e-book reader could hit both American and European carriers by March, 2010, and that it’ll include both 3G and WiMAX versions (plus WiFi, naturally), but presumably not a version with both 3G and WiMAX.

Welcome to CFB Smorgasboard, Week 9. I’m your Peter Marshall (see No. 2 on this epic list ), also known as Big Brain on Brett. It’s a reference from Pulp Fiction, which is probably the best movie made in 1994. Other candidates: Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, Clerks, Speed, The Professional, True Lies, Swimming with Sharks. Damn, 1994 was a good year for films. My Netflix queue just got fuller than Kate Gosselin’s hoo-ha once she finds an appropriate sitter.

Actor, comedian and author, Amy Sedaris is Sony’s ambassador in its venture into the world’s next frontier of digital media: the book. In her ad on Sony’s web site Sedaris jokingly says, “People always are asking me: Amy Sedaris, how is it that you’re so amazingly well read? And I say first of all it’s true, thank you very much. But I like to think that it’s because my reader touch edition.” Which begs the question: How long have “reader touch editions” been around? As a student at this University, you will run into a class that relies on WebVista and PDF versions of necessary texts.

Compelling story of an “innocent” man being set up as a killer.Oscar Bane, a new character insists on speaking only to Kay Scarpetta and Benton when he is suspected in his girl friend, Terri’s murder. He is obviously a disturbed person as the reader hears Kay interview him. It is unclear if he is indeed guilty. Kay, being the kind hearted hero that she is, wants to believe this deranged “little person” and since she has seen him as a patient, can not discuss the interview with Benton or anyone else unless Oscar is formally charged with murder. This makes the story more complex as the reader is privy to information that none of the other investigators have knowledge of.

Well friends, it’s become a verifiable obsession, and it seems like every day there’s a new reader app or comic designed specifically for mobile devices. Of the applications, comiXology seems to have the frontrunner, offering comics from some pretty reliable indie publishers like Arcana, Red 5, and one of my personal faves, SLG.

Dear New York Times, please stop with this weekender crap. Paper isn’t a conversation, nor is it a language. No couple was brought together by smudging ink on their hands. If delivery is the highlight of someone’s weekend, they’re probably banging the paperboy. And the woman who planned her trip to Spain with a newspaper? She got there by clipper ship. Most times I change the channel when I see African children on my television screen. The images are formulaic—poverty stricken brown babies, bellies swollen, faces scowled in sadness—hopeless, save for the potential grace that a “dollar-a-day” might provide. I balk at the images, not because I begrudge these children those dollars for food and shelter, but because as an African it offends my sensibilities to be constantly saddled with only one side of what I know to be a complex and crucially important story.

There’s nothing geeks love more than to argue mobile phone platforms. Here’s Matt Blaisdell saying that apps weren’t key to iPhone’s success . That’s true, but now that Apple has apps the world has changed and challengers to the iPhone will find it very tough. Here’s why: everyone is using a different set of 20 apps. Trillions of combinations. You can see this on Appsfire’s VIP list (my iPhone apps are listed there, along with a number of others). None of us have the same set of apps.

This book is a collection of the life’s work and essential teachings of Jigoro Kano, who founded Kodokan Judo in Tokyo in 1882. Kodokan Judo was for Kano the culmination of a lifelong devotion to the jujutsu of the past, which he reorganized along educational lines while taking great care to retain its classical traditions. In doing so, he opened the path from jutsu (skill) to do (way), and broadened the horizons of knowledge until he reached the point at which he began to advocate seiryoku zenyo (maximum efficiency) and jita kyoei (mutual prosperity), which represent the universality and ideal of human existence, and are the core values of judo.

It’s hard for birders to see albatrosses. You have to a book a boat trip, they take all day (or longer!), and there are long periods of boredom punctuated by frenzied excitement when you run across birds – which you really hope you don’t miss seeing! And even if you’re not prone to seasickness, inevitably others on the boat are, so that part is unpleasant no matter what. The birds that you get see are spectacular though. So Nancy and I have ended up taking quite a few pelagic trips, and we’ve ended up seeing a lot of albatrosses.

Say hello to the eDGe, the name that I cannot write without MS Word autocorrecting the hell out of me. This is a device that gives convergence a whole new side. Entourage has taken specialty devices like an eBook Reader and netbook and put them both together to have a dual screen, multi-function device. Hence the name DualBook. Actually, I think this is a great idea. Consumers do not want multiple devices to carry and that is the main reason why convergent devices came in to existence.

Speaking with Sprint’s Wayne Ward you come away amazed at the potential ahead for wireless carriers in the burgeoning machine-to-machine or M2M space. Just what exactly is M2M? It is simply machines communicating with machines. Quite often this interaction is to satisfy the needs of a person, corporation or system - for example when an automobile senses a mechanical problem and signals the manufacturer for a wireless diagnostic which determines the car needs service and subsequently alerts the driver.

In this time of eBook, eBooks and more eBooks we think it’s worth noting that a price war has broken out over 10 pre-order hard cover titles. We wonder if it more books will be added to the list, the price keeps getting reduced, and if other online book providers will join in. It began yesterday when Wal-Mart announced that they were reducing the price of ten titles to $10 for books purchased on Walmart.com. Then, Amazon.com came back by lowering the price for those same titles to $9.

The Amazon Kindle 2 is ideally sized for one-handed reading. In this category, it beats the traditional book, because it’s single pane is more ergonomic for the purpose of reading with one hand and seeing the text clearly at a consistent angle, than struggling to balance a side-bound traditional book. In this sense, it is comfortable for holding, but anyone could argue that the traditional book is more rewarding from a sensory perspective, with flipping pages, constant subtle movements that stimulate the eye and hold the reader’s attention, near zero glare and good and reliable contrast.

In 2007 Amazon.com came out with an electronic reading device called Kindle. Up to that point very few of us had ever heard of ebook readers. Sony and some other companies had ebook readers on the market at the time but had not made much headway. Kindle however made a splash. But Amazon did not stop there. While other companies were wondering what was going on, Amazon came out with an improved version of their reader called the Kindle 2. Instantly this new Kindle model became an instant success.

Product Description Recent developments in the Gulf–including the war in Iraq and the crisis surrounding the Iranian nuclear program–are presenting new challenges to security and stability in the region. Man, are people into reading, or what? Hot on the heels of the BeBook Mini launch in the US and news that Barnes & Noble could be introducing an e-reader of its own as early as next week, Endless Ideas is now rumored to have its BeBook 2 on deck for an October 14th release. And considering that it has a booth at the Frankfurt Book Fair this week, we’d say there’s at least a decent chance that the rumors are true.

The WikiReader is a small handheld device about the size of a stack of Post-It notes that exists to serve one function and one function only: access to Wikipedia from the palm of your hand. The device embodies simplicity with a monochrome touchscreen and 3 simple buttons: Search, History, and Random. It runs on two AAA batteries, reportedly enough to power the device for several months. The catch — beyond being a one-trick pony — is that unlike the actual Wikipedia, the WikiReader is not updated in real-time as articles change.

In the past, I’ve written about the Kindle . Specifically, I griped about the lack of support for smaller news organizations wishing to use the Kindle and pondered the direction of future eReaders. Today, I received an email announcing a new device that has the potential to add an interesting disruption to the ereader market, the WikiReader Pocket Wikipedia . It has a reflective monochrome 240×208 capacitive touchscreen and a 8 GB MicroSDHC card. The card is formatted in FAT32 format and contains a snapshot of Wikipedia.

I have been getting lots of reports this weekend that Barnes and Noble intends to announce a competitor to Amazon’s Kindle as soon as October 20th. That is the date for an event to be held at Chelsea Piers in NY that B&N has been sending out a slew of exclusive invites for. They are promising “a major event in our company’s history”, which I am betting will be the long-rumored formal debut of their Ebook Reader. The initial device is expected to sport a 6 inch black and white digital ink screen.

Finally bit the bullet and got myself an Amazon Kindle ebook reader.  Technically, Amazon calls it a “wireless reading device,” which is actually quite accurate — besides ebooks, it does newspapers, magazines, blogs, etc. I like it. Current pricing puts it at $279, which [...] Related posts: My Thoughts on the eBook Format 7 Ways to Repurpose Your Book to Increase Accessibility and Significantly Boost Sales News to Use

Move over Kindle, Barnes & Noble wants a piece of that ebook reader pie. A few days ago, The Wall Street Journal (registration required) broke the news that well-known bookseller Barnes & Noble was about to launch its own ebook reader.  This is no huge surprise as the company launched an ebook store back in July, and it has been rumored for some time that the company wanted to take on Amazon’s Kindle.

A couple of months ago a representative from Ignatius Press posted on the LibriVox forum, asking if there were any readers who’d like to audition to narrate books for them. So I read their little audition piece and in late August they hired me to narrate “A Postcard from the Volcano”, by Lucy Beckett. It was a fantastic book! I enjoyed every minute of the story, even when I felt a little bit stressed about doing a good enough job (and pronouncing all the Polish place-names correctly) and getting done on time (they had a very short deadline for this one).

If you are not familiar with ebooks, then you are missing out on a great experience. While it is true that some people prefer to do their reading with a copy of a book in their hands, others are turning to the internet and their computers to find the information they need. John Little, a fitness and bodybuilding expert, has produced an ebook for those who want to get started with bodybuilding. His “Beginning Bodybuilding” is a good start for those who do not have a lot of experience in the gym.

PC World - It looks like Amazon’s timing is spot on. The online bookseller’s lower $259 price for the Kindle 2, along with several other factors, will help boost sales of eBook readers significantly for 2009, according to a new study by Forrester Research.

Amazon is cutting the price of the Kindle once more, this time hoping for a holiday rush. When the Kindle 2 launched it was $359. It dropped to $299 in July and has now cut another $40, bringing the world’s most famous e-reader to an almost reasonable $259 ($199 and we’ll talk, Bezos). With the price cut also came news that wireless download capabilities have been added internationally in 10 different countries. That’s a big update for a feature that was previously only available stateside.
