How do you organize the books on my Kindle?

The Kindles currently do not organize books in folders as we do in computers. The organization on kindles are little different: for example, you can look at listings for just personal documents ( K2 and kindle dx),  books (including personal documents on K1), subscriptions (newspapers, magazines, and blogs), or all of them.

You can also sort books. You can sort by

  • title,
  • author, or
  • most recent.

The author and title are determined by “metadata” (information stored inside the book).

Some books list the authors by first name first, some by last name first. There is no way you can change these through the kindle or on your computer unless you can edit the metada information. And that’s not possible if the book is DRMed.

Here is the way to sort:

  • For K1: Select the Show and Sort menu at the top of the homescreen
  • For K2 and kindle dx: On the homescreen, flick your 5-way up, and then left for filter (to choose which category to display) or flick right to change the sort.

On K2, you can see the number of pages the page you are currently viewing at the bottom left corner of the screen. If you want to go certain page type the page number, and click your 5-way. This way you can easily jump to the last page, which stores links to your archived items and the periodical back issues.

If you are sorted by title or author, you can also type the first letter to which you want to jump, and click the 5-way. Remember, you have to me on the home screen to do that.

Since you can’t create folders on kindle it’s better to have less books on kindle to have sorting more effective. The more books there are on your kindle, the more difficult it is going to be to find things.
