For a long time Kindle users were requesting a folder option for Kindle so that they can organize ebooks. Finally with the 2.5 updates of Kindle firmware, you can get it done smoothly. Amazon doesn’t say it ‘folder, rather ‘collection. What does it mean? “A collection is a category you create on your Kindle Home screen. You can then move your books, audiobooks, and personal documents from the Home screen to the collections you create. Your Kindle will sort your content by collections after you create your first collection.”
Here are the steps to create a collection:
- Select “Create New Collection” from the Home screen menu.
- Enter a name for the collection.
- Select “Save” with the 5-way controller when finished.
You can rename or delete a collection. Here is the detail on Kindle help page.
Here are few important things to remember about collections:
- An ebook can be in more than one cleection
- Collection are store on Amazon. When you create a collection on a device, we’ll save your collection so it appears in Archived Items on other devices registered to your Amazon.com account. This allows you to transfer collections across registered Kindles.
- A collection can be deleted, but it doesn’t mean that the ebook will be deleted from your kindle. If you want to delete a book you need select that book individually.
- If you delete a book from a collection, it doesn’t mean that the book is no longer in that collection at all. It’s on on your Kindle, but it is store in your Archive in the same collection.
- You can’t put Periodicals in collection
- You can sort books in a collection by Title, Author, or Most Recent First. The default isĀ Most Recent First

You can easily create collections on your kindle from your folders on your computer with this free web utility.

Wait – let me guess – you have to move your files ONE BY ONE into the collection?
If I can’t grab a list of 1000 documents and move them ALL AT ONCE into a folder, it defeats the purpose of having a folder. I only need folders because I have thousands of documents to organize. I can’t move them one by one.
Ooh – ‘kindler’s utility might let me do what I want to do!
