I Heard Kindle 3 Doesn’t Have Number Keys on the Keyboard. How Can I Type Numbers With Kindle 3?

Yes, it’s true. The new Kindle smaller in size, and the keyboard has been reorganized. And the top row of the keyboard that used to have number keys has been removed. In order to type number now you have to use shortcuts. For example, to type number “1″ use alt+Q. Thus alt+top row alphabets gives you the desired number.

  • Alt+Q > 1
  • Alt+W > 2
  • Alt+E > 3
  • Alt+R > 4
  • Alt+T > 5
  • Alt+Y > 6
  • Alt+U > 7
  • Alt+I > 8
  • Alt+O > 9
  • Alt+P > 0

can you point to where in the manual that is written? The only reference in the manual specifically states the numbers are accessed under the SYM key then using the “d-pad” to select the desired number. Also the pictures on the Amazon site show no numbers written on the corresponting letter key to show the connection to the ALT key like on the DX/DXG…

The reference to numbers is in the first chapter of the K3 manual. So until there is some sort of confirmation I am assuming there may have been a change from the beta units or the current manual is our of date or the photos on the K3 page at Amazon are old and need updating to the same hints as on the DX family keyboard…

I picked it up from some discussion on Kindle forum, and some other blog. Nobody got new Kindle yet, so no way confirm that first hand.

It’s in the PDF Version of the Kindle 3 Manual on page 144 under ‘Global Shortcuts’.

Dave:

Thanks for the page link. When I downloaded the original K3 manual from Amazon and did a search the only result was the page indicating to access the numbers was under the SYM key pick-list/menu. Very nice to know they did not completely drop the ball on numbers. The Alt-combo without the numbers silk screened on the letter keys is at best a kludge that sorta smells like a “…d’oh!! guess what we forgot to add…” to the K3….hehehehe….

Still at least there is a more serviceable way than that SYM pick-list.

So thanks and thanks to Admin for your answer as well…but remember there is a way to find out and that would be given the nature of your blog you should have been able to follow up directly with Amazon or find a beta tester for the device somewhere. I mean gee wize guys, this is what ya do… :p hehehehe, I know it’s a lot of fires to stomp out every device that gets announced so thanks either way.

You can get a kindle 3 number label that you can apply above the top row of your kindle so you can easily identify which keys correspond to which numbers when using the ‘Alt-+’ shortcut instead of counting or memorizing keys.
