Okay, amazon has released kindle dx with native PDF support targeting not only textbooks but also the people who have huge collection PDF e-books or technical documents. It’s true that PDF support is the most sort-after feature on an e-book device; but the size of the screen has so far been lacking.
Now DX is out; and people are putting forward reviews on the internet. Here is some reviews from amazon review page about kindle dx‘s PDF support:
The PDF reader works as advertised, and is extremely convenient. PDF documents appear on the DX exactly as they do on a computer screen. Moreover, you can drag and drop your documents directly to the device using the USB cable (or use the for-a-fee email if you absolutely must.)
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I loaded my PDFs onto the kindle dx. The formatting of the page displayed perfectly!!! zooming and rotating was simple.
One of the key features that I was looking for was the ability for the reader to read and process PDF documents. …. PDF is the bare minimum as many technical journals, work documents, etc are pdf formatted. I never felt comfortable with sending the document to Amazon to be converted as I am worried about security and unlawful viewing of confidential documents by someone other than myself. With the DX, problem is solved! The large screen is great for documents that cannot be “reformatted” – i.e. pdf.
The native PDF support is absolutely brilliant. I sent a 6.7MB manual to my DX account. It appeared in less than 2 minutes! The fonts are crisp, the graphics are decent, and there is a “go to page” feature that allows you to skip through large PDFs.
I write technical documents for a living. The product documentation that I write is full of images, diagrams, and rich formatting. I’ve tried loading my PDF documents onto my kindle 1, but they won’t display. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I loaded my PDFs onto the kindle dx. The formatting of the page displayed perfectly!!! Zooming and rotating was simple.
The DX is touted heavily for the PDF functionality and larger screen. Well, I read a lot of technical documents as well as textbooks I have in PDF format. The reading on this is superb. Great balance in size vs. readability (compared to full A4).
So, what do you do now? Buy a kindle dx? Before making that decision, thinkĀ first:
- Do you read a lot of PDF formatted books? kindle dx is good for journal articles, tecnical documents, computer programming books, web design books, comic books. Besides, we know a lot of PDF e-books are downloadable from internet (though most of the are illegally shared). If your answer is yes, go for kindle dx if you don’t have any kindle now.
- If you have a kindle 1 or kindle 2, but prefer to read PDF e-books mostly, sell your old kindle (even you can do that through amazon), and orderĀ kindle dx.
- If you use kindle for reading fictions or non-fictions with simple text only, don’t go for kindle dx.
