BlogKindle has disassembled Kindle 3, not every part of it, just has taken the back cover off, and tried to give us some idea what it looks like inside. Here is what BlogKindle says:
Seeing how easy it is to remove Kindle 3 cover since there are no parts attached to it either outside or inside at all I couldn’t resist the temptation to take it off and snap the following picture (click to see full resolution version).
Here’s a scoop of what I was able to see:
- Battery is 3.7V 1750 mAh 6,47Wh Li-Po LICO S11GTSF01A branded for Amazon Kindle. Kindle 2 contained 1530 mAh battery so this is a slight upgrade.
- 3G modem is AnyDATA DTP-600W, FCC ID: P4M-DTP-600W, IC : 4594A-DTP600W.
- WiFi card is Atheros AR6102G.
- It uses Wolfson Microelectronics WM8960G stereo codec and 1W speaker and headphone driver chip.
At the moment I didn’t want to dig deeper since I didn’t want to risk accidentally ruining the device before this review is done. I promise to take a better look at what’s inside in the future.

Thanks for linking to my post. It looks like I’ve got two chips mixed up on the picture though. I’ve updated the picture so perhaps you should too.
BTW, I don’t mind hotlinking at all.
Thank you for letting me know. I’ve already changed the picture.
Very interesting. How easy is it to remove the back cover- can it be done without any damage to the cover? Does this open the door for third-party replacement batteries?
It seems removing back cover isn’t that difficult as BlogKindle says. In that case replacement of battery possible if it’s available from third-party.
I’m wondering how much different the WiFi only internals are?
i.e.
Does it have an empty Sim card slot?
Does it have the mini-PCI slot wating for a 3G card?
Hopefully once it’s been “rooted” 3rd party drivers might be used to get a 3G card running with a Pay-As-You Go sim card.^_^

No, the space where the sim card slot would be, is empty, and there is no mini-PCI slot, there is a plastic placeholder instead.
I was so much hoping there would me a micro-SD card or so inside, but unfortunately there is none.
Interesting…is there a chance you could tell me what kind of CPU and memory card the kindle uses?
