Yes, it’s final. WSJ broke the story that amazon will start taking pre-order for two new Kindles from Thursday.  The WSJ quoted an interview with Jeff Bezos:

We developed this device for serious readers. At these price points, it may be much broader than that. People will buy them for their kids. People won’t share Kindles any more.

Even though amazon will start taking orders from Thursday, customers have to wait until August 27 when amazon will start shipping the new Kindles. It seems that the new Kindles do not have any surprise except better screen quality, and a new wifi-only kindle making it more affordable.

However, the new device will be 21% smaller, even though it will have the same six-inch screen. Secondly, to avoid potential distractions on the screen—like the bar at the top featuring the title of the book have been removed or minimized in the new Kindles.

Jeff also confirmed that amazon will be committed in developing Kindle rather than jumping on Tablet bandwagon:

There are going to be 100 companies making LCD [screen] tablets. Why would we want to be 101? I like building a purpose-built reading device. I think that is where we can make a real contribution.
