Now you have almost whole generation of kindle. Amazon has just released 3 more e-ink Kindles and a android based tablet – Kindle Fire. Glad to know that Amazon didn’t kill 3rd generation Kindles – Kindles with keyboards. But Amazon has created many choices available, specially for prospective new Kindle buyers. From consumers’ perspective, this should to be good. However, it’s also hard to choose a right one that suits your need when you have so many choices with differences in forms and functionality. This problem is even more true for Amazon since consumers have no choices to see it in hand in a retail store. As you can see in the pictures, you have now five choices in e-ink devices – 3 new ones, and two old ones. Kindle Fire is of its own kind – it’s not dedicated ereader though you can still read ebooks and magazines.
The price, as well, ranges from $79 to $199. Of course, if you take out Kindle Fire, the price range is reduced to $79-$149. In other other words,
- you can have a touch screen 3G Kindle for the price of 3rd generation 3G Kindle now with only $10 difference. There is definitely no reason to buy a touch screen 3G Kindle unless some strong fascination for physical keyboard.
- If don’t need 3G service, then you can save $50 – go for a touch screen wifi-only Kindle for $99.
- If you don’t care about touch screen or physical keyboard, the you can save even more – almost $70. Go for a new basic Kindle at $79.
- If you have strong inclination towards tablet and you like to read magazines, and occasionally ebooks, and don’t need longer battery time – then go for Kindle Fire at $199. It’s cheaper than many other tablets in the market. More importantly, you know Amazon can support you with desired content – ebooks, magazines, MP3, movies, apps etc. etc.
