Newspapers Going Digital Only

It’s obviously going to come at some point in the future, newspapers going digital only. There’s only so long that the practice of mushing up dead trees to get the news to us is going to last, given the ease of digital distribution.

However, none of us are really sure how long that’s all going to take: nor are we sure who is going to be left standing when it does happen. For digital distribution also blurs rather the geographic monopolies that many news organisations have had. Not just newspapers of course: video over the net is impacting upon free to air TV stations as well.

The Guardian seems to be the UK paper that is likely to first turn off the printing presses. They’re losing money hand over fist which doesn’t help matters of course. When they put in their most recent set of presses (only a few years ago) they indicated at the time that they thought they might be the last set they ever bought.
