NYT examines authors who tweet

Is fol­low­ing a tweet­ing writer like “look­ing behind the curtain,” an act bound to spoil our pre­cious idea of our favorite authors?Jef­frey Eugenides, author of The Mar­riage Plot and Mid­dle­sex, post­ed to Face­book that it’s “bet­ter, I think, for read­ers not to com­mu­ni­cate too direct­ly with an author because the author is, strange­ly enough, beside the point.” In spite of the fact that using Twit­ter is hard­ly con­ducive to deep con­cen­tra­tion, writ­ers and read­ers are increas­ing­ly tak­ing to the ser­vice, and it’s not sim­ply that pub­lish­ers are push­ing writ­ers to “get social” to drive book sales. Salman Rushdie told The New York Times ”it allows one to be play­ful, to get a sense of what is on a lot of peo­ple’s minds at any given moment.” Read on…
