What’s happening in eReader market?

Is the demand for the e-ink based e-reader dying out? look at the following figure:

According to iSuppli sales of e-readers like the Amazon Kindle and the Nook have peaked in 2011 with 23.2 million units. After that sales figure shows downhill. And its expected to continue next years. However, ereader sales show sharp uphill while downhill is much flatter.

We can expect a color screen eReader, an alternative to iPad or LCD type screen, to revamp the market.

Don't Buy an eReader Unless it Supports Wide Range of Contents or Big eBookStore

The ebook and ereader markets are still going through some turmoil even after substantial price cuts of major eink-based ereaders like Kindle, Nook, Kobo, and Sony Readers – all of which are backed by large scale ebook retailers like Amazon, B&N, and Borders. While it seemed just a couple of months back that all other ereaders those donot have decent market share would disappear soon. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. There is a bunch of ereaders like Pocketebook, Sharper Image Literati, iReiver Cover Story, Cool-er, Pandigital Novel, Pockerbook IQ, BenQ K61, Ectaco Jetbook mini, Aluratek More >

Relative Size eBook Stores

The Digital Inspiration blog has produced a chart showing the comparison of ebook stores among Apple iBook store, B&N Nook Store, Sony Reader Store and Amazon Kindle Store. According to the blog:

Sony says their eBook store has more than 1.2 million titles but if we discount Google Books, the actual store size is around 60,000 titles.

Barnes & Noble’s eBook store too claims to have more than a million books for the Nook but the number of titles available in the store is around 26,000 – the rest are public domain (out of copyright) works that you may download through Google Books.

Buy or Not to Buy Nook – a Big Push for New Kindle

B&N investors have decided to sell the company. The financial trouble, bad earings, and ‘unvervalued shates’ are to blame for such decision. When Amazon announced the new Kindle, B&N announced the uncertain future of the company. Recently the company cut the price of Nook from $259 to $199 and released Nook wifi at $149. And Amazon, in retaliation, reduced the price of Kindle 2 to $189. At that time it was believed that B&N was committed to Nook platform, and ready to head-to-head with Amazon. In a month, the situation has changed, and now the uncertainty about the future of the company is More >

War of eReader Titans: Kindle gets Price Cuts to $189

After B&N cut the price of Nook 3G to $199, and release a new wifi Nook Amazon has decided to reduce the price of Kindle 2 to $189, that’s a $10 less than the 3G Nook, but $30 more than Nook wifi. Kindle 2 and Nook wifi are not comparable, but lack of Amazon’s decision to announce a wifi Kindle will still hurt the sales of Kindle, and kindle ebooks. The whole price war thing put Amazon in defensive position. Amazon should be much more aggressive in pricing and availability of new Kindle. It should announce a new wifi kindle soon, and set the price of wifi Kindle no more than $125. Is it More >
