What Kindle 3 Browser Can Do and Can’t Do?

in Feature,Kindle

There is a lot of curosity about Kindle’s webKit-based browser. However, I couldn’t any review of Kindle web browser from those people who got early access to Kindle 3 except ireaderreview. This site puts a lot of pictures of the browser. Here is the summary:

Even tough Kindle web browser is full-fledged one, and it can load a lot of complex websites like NYtimes, CNN, ESPAN etc., the mobile version loads faster. However, most of Google services don’t work, specially main version of the sites; but the mobile versions of some of the services works fine like Gmail & Google Reader. Google Maps, Yahoo! Mail don’t work.

[stextbox id="info"]Remember Kindle 3 web browser does support javascripts, but not Flash & Java, not even Ajax[/stextbox]

Here is some properties of the browser:

Article Mode:

This mode works on most of the websites. In Article Mode “all the banners and extrinsics like drop down menus and non-article graphics are stripped out. All you get is the text and occasionally the main image. Basically it works like Readability (a desktop browser plug-in that strips away everything except the main Article) and converts web articles and blog posts into little book chapters.”

Page Split:

After the initial load of larger pages the browser often splits the whole page into multiple pages that you must navigate through

  • either by using the 5-way controller
  • or by hitting the Next Page and Prev Page buttons

Zooming in:

When a page is loaded the Kindle 3 Browser suggests a default zoom level by showing a box outline with a magnifying glass icon. You can’t click on anything until you zoom in. Once you zoom in you can move around and use the cursor to get to whatever you want to click on. There are zoom options – Fit to Screen, Actual Size, 150%, 200%, and 300%.

Other Features:

You can browse through your History and delete it, you can delete cookies, and bookmark websites.

I think the best way to use the browser might be to use the Aa button to turn the display orientation to wide-horizontal, rather than try to battle with trying to browse in vertical orientation: this is simply more like your modern computer screen, and that’s what browsers and web-pages are designed for -HORIZONTAL orientation.
