Those who ordered Kindle last month or beginning of this month are receiving Kindle 3. Here is the list of first reaction from those who’re for the first time became Kindle owners collected from Amazon Kindle Forum ( I’ll continue to add more as I get it):
- Kindle 3 is light weight
- The screen gives you really the book reading feeling (no matter from which ankle you look at the screen).
- The features, new form-factor, and price induced people to buy Kindle 3.
- The screen is exceptionally clear and crisp and does have the best contrast compared to Nook, Sony, and Kobo.
- The page refresh is also excellent, certainly only a fraction of a second and not very jarring.
- The highlighting and bookmarking features are great for taking notes right inside the book
- The touted AT&T free hotspot access does indeed work.
- The browsing/download speeds seem zippy. The Webkit renders pages accurately, but complex sites w/ lots of graphics and/or scripting do tend to crash the Kindle requiring a hard reset.
- It’s also disappointing the way the browser handles certain file types. You are limited basically only to Kindle books and basic text files as far as supported download types. even though the device supports PDFs and MP3 playback.
- The browser doesn’t launch web links coded to open in external windows, it will simply provide an error, and there is no work around as there is no “copy/paste” equivalent on the device.
- The mp3 audio playback is a nice touch, as I really do enjoy playing music while reading, but the downside is you have no control over playback order, and the controls are a bit clunky (Alt+Space to pause and Alt+F to skip ahead a track, but no option for going back a track).
- The PDF reader is pretty awesome. Page formatting seems good, and in PDFs which are indexed (i.e., searchable) the dictionary and search features work perfectly. Highlighting and bookmarking also work. One downside, if you have an internally linked PDF w/ page links, those do not appear to work.
- Some people don’t like ‘locations’ in the books. They rather prefer page number so that you know which number of page you’re in while reading.
